You guessed it, we’re back and more pumped than EVER!
What’s that? You haven’t a clue what’s going on? Well first of all, allow me to introduce myself. I’m Shintaz and I’m bad at TF2. However, that doesn’t stop me from organising one of the LARGEST TF2 events EVER! That’s right; the European edition of SPUF 6v9 has come around once again!
If you don’t know the rules or haven’t heard of it before, quite frankly you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months! If you have found yourself living under a rock and want to know what’s going down, let me explain:
• It’s a clash of the titans event, as six of the very best European players (hand picked from the top10 teams) face off against nine regular every day public players (hand picked from the steam forums).
• The six Europeans will be playing as they usually would competitively – class limit 2, demo limit 1, medic limit 1 (that’s 2 scouts, 2 soldiers, 1 medic and 1 demo to me and you).
• The nine public players will be playing the game in highlander mode – class limit 1 (that’s one of each class to me and you).
• The official rules used will be the same used in the European Team Fortress 2 league – this covers basic areas of competitive play, such as no-crits, a time limit and a win limit.
Sound awesome? Want to get involved? Sadly, you can’t. The public roster is full and has been for a while and everybody is rearing to go! Both full rosters are:
Scout: Bennyg
Soldier: sturdypete
Pyro: MrAmPm
Demoman: HeroNL
Heavy: deviland
Engineer: NearNihil
Medic: NdangeredSpycrab
Sniper: metaljarate
Spy: evilduck
The Pros:
Scouts: TCM|zerox // dignitas/bybben
Soldiers: cube.idk? // WeMadeFux Evil
Demoman: TLR|Thy
Medic: TCM|Byte (yes, he plays medic now!)
With each roster being completely full and everything from STV to a mumble cast sorted, everybody is ready to go! I decided to talk to a few people from each team, to see what they thought participating in such an event:
TCM|Byte - Competitive Medic
Hello Byte, thank you for your time. First of all, briefly introduce yourself for our readers.
Hi! I'm Mr. Byte-me :D Been around the TF2 scene pretty much from the very start. I play currently medic for TCM-Gaming, however my main class is demoman.
With the knowledge that the pubbers actually defeated the pro’s last time, are you nervous? What are your main concerns about the upcoming game?
Nervous? Nah, I've reached a stage in TF2 that no matter what game or what for, it makes no difference. I'm more excited than nervous. The thrill of having to take on nine players with my usual six and I've got to keep these 5 men alive - for the pride and stake of our "professional" reputation. My main concerns are the sniper and spy, one thing I know about public players is that they master the light classes far more than the heavier ones.
Theoretically, you are the pubbers main target and you will have three more players hunting you than usual. How do you think you’ll adapt to this, if at all?
More calling and dynamic thinking will be the main change I’d say. I can only predict that the comms are going to be hectic and there’s only so much I can call. At the end of the day, it’s about how many people my team can kill – and I have a lot of confidence in the lineup. If I call the right things at the right times, I don’t really see much changing.
Any final words you’d like to give to your opponents?
The best of luck to them, should be a very fun match. Bring the noise!
Thank you for your time Byte.
TLR|Thy – Competitive Demoman
Hello Thy, thank you for your time. First of all, briefly introduce yourself for our readers.
My name is Thy, I am sixteen years old and I play demoman for the German team TLR.
As the demoman, you're seen as the biggest damage dealer. How do you think this will change, knowing there are three more people to aim at?
First of all, thank you. I doubt my gamestyle or the teams general playstyle will change – the demoman will still be dealing the most damage. I don’t think it will differ from my usual 6v6 gameplay, I just have more targets to deal more damage to.
You’re going to be against a regular, every day pubber demo. Do you think this could cause problems, as his gamestyle will be much different to the gamestyle of other high-tier demos?
I don’t think it should cause many problems, as I am the more skilled demoman. I wouldn’t really take many drastic measures, like going ‘back to basics’ just because he is a different player. I’m more focused on the fact that they have a three man advantage, so I’m pretty certain it’d be best to stick to my usual 6v6 gamestyle.
Any final words you’d like to give to your opponents?
I hope it will be a great match and good fun for both of us!
Thank you for your time Thy.
Lord Benjamin – Pub Scout
Hello Lord Benjamin, thank you for your time. First of all, briefly introduce yourself for our readers.
Well, I'm Benjamin, usually known under the nickname "Bennyg". I'm a German guy, which obviously has a lot of interest in Team Fortress 2.
The last lot of pubbers won against the pros, with a pretty clear victory on pl_badwater. Do you think your lineup has what it takes to win this round of pubbers vs pros?
I believe the shoes we have to fill are large – but I see potential in my team and do believe we can win. I have noticed that nearly everybody in my team has some basic competitive knowledge – whether it is one or two tf2lobby matches, or even being in a division 6 team. I see this type of experience helping us when we’re in the heat of the battle.
You are pitting your own scout skills against two of the very best scouts in the European scene. How does it make you feel, knowing you are competing against the best of the best?
No biggy, they’ll be no match for me! No, in all seriousness, I am kind of… afraid of them. I’ve closely watched a few demos of theirs and both of them seem pretty damn good.
Any final words you’d like to give to your opponents?
I hope both of the teams will have lots of fun and let’s make it a decent match!
Thank you for your time Lord Benjamin.
Metalpiss – Pub Sniper
Hello metalpiss, thank you for your time. First of all, briefly introduce yourself for our readers.
Hi, I'm a 22 year old architecture student from Romania, who spends more time playing video games and drawing random stuff than studying.
In the last 6v9, some agree that the sniper (Freeflow) was man of the match – seems you have big boots to fill. Are you worried that because of this, you may be one of the main targets?
Sadly, I missed the last instance of this event, but indeed I heard great things about Freflow. I guess it does put quite a bit of pressure on me, but the focus will be more on team play than individual skill. If I won't be in top shape, I'm sure that as a team we could still shine.
You're pitting yourself against 6 of the finest players in Europe. What inspired you to sign up, or was it just a random occurrence?
Hehe yeah, it's quite a daunting thought. I wanted to get into the competitive scene of TF2 for as long as I found out it existed (a few months after I started playing it), but I never thought I quite had it in me and being very shy didn't help at all. Also I had a really crappy old computer that couldn't play TF2 over 30 fps. Now that I have a brand new comp so technical difficulties are out of the question, I thought of giving myself some shock therapy that hopefully will give me the boost I need...or the humiliation of a lifetime… heh.
Any final words you’d like to give to your opponents?
Just looking forward to playing with you...can't think of any decent trash talk right now.
Thank you for your time metalpiss.
The event is taking place at 11:00 PDT // 13:00 EDT // 18:00 BST // 19:00 CET.

On top of all this, Freeflow (the previous 6v9 sniper) has whipped up a fine collection of posters – a new one each day, introduced in true “Meet the Team” style. All of them (so far) can be seen on the official thread, but here is a new one, first seen on communityfortress!
(Click for full-size image)
It’s 1-1 overall and the pubbers victory has certainly given this lot of pubbers a huge confidence boost. Who do you want to win? Make sure you’re there on time and have an STV spot to witness one of the most epic Team Fortress 2 battles of the year!
Full details on everything in this article (as well as new posters daily and some fun team facts) can be found on the official thread.
