ESEA Considering Dropping TF2

On Wednesday night, ESEA owner lpkane said in an ESEA discussion topic that the league will "most likely pull the plug on tf2 after this season, but regardless... try and finish out this season strong." In response to other comments, he said, "comments exactly like that are why you won't see tf2 on esea past this season," later adding that he was "dropping a game that loses [him] money." When asked for a definite "yes or no" on whether the league would continue running TF2 after the current season, he answered simply, "after this thread, signs point to no."

#18 BloodSire 2010-05-08 16:09 All this is based off the assumption that ESEA, has expanded the legitimacy and attention of TF2 within the gaming world. I think this is a grossly overstated assumption. The best seasons of TF2 took place outside ESEA, imo, and when you look at the community since, can you actually say ESEA is drawing in more players/teams? Is it bridging the game into other ESEA users like CS players?

Last I looked, the only cs teams giving tf2 a shot were in cevo…perhaps because newer players/teams maintain some hesitation about committing payment (however small) to try the game out. TWL succeeds based off newer teams, ESEA off serious teams, and cevo is caught in the middle.

I would argue contrary to most. I think options are great, and ESEA as an option is even better, but I do not think it had improved TF2 in the way people assume it has. I think it has constricted some of TF2's life, and duped players to believe this business model is the only "worthy" avenue to compete in tf2.

Kane handled this all wrong. enigma might have been serious the first 10 minutes, but after that, he was just trolling Kane…and kane took the bait and was dragged for a good 2-3 hours.
Honestly, what is wrong with him? The ONLY TF2 league that shouldn't be giving us that sort of attitude is ESEA because we are paying customers.
Leagues like TWL and CEVO are free, they have the right to say "STFU, its a free service", but TrainriderJ and Jinn are both very nice sports and say things like "We're working hard on it. Thanks for the comments."

kane is trying to make it sound like he's doing us a favor, and thats what is bothering me the most.

what kind of paying customers bait and troll the people who work hard to give them what they want? not very good ones if you ask me. afk

+2 #15 VonLieberman 2010-05-06 14:46 Here's what confuses me. They decide to put their business' resources into TF2. And there's a pretty big community interested in TF2. And then they basically give a shitty effort at building/improving the community. And then they complain that TF2 makes no money.

Did they think that their league would just make free money without them putting any effort into it? Or did they just not think there was much money to be made? So then why did they go into TF2 in the first place?

+2 #10 defiancd 2010-05-06 07:43 I think dj brings up a great point, he is payed, people pay for his league. Honestly if ESEA was professional they would fire him right away. There are plenty of free leagues that have the right to act like he is, but don't. He is acting like he is paying for us to play or something.

+7 #9 eXtine 2010-05-06 07:40 Kane is the owner? Jeez… I thought he was, like just one step above killing in the name of, i.e. an actual ESEA honcho but still inexperienced dealing with paying customers and trolls.

I see his point requiring the use of the client, since it is a major part of their system, they need it to easily authenticate who is playing, collect stats, and an STV.

Unfortunately it seems like he hasn't seen any one else's points regarding get matches played when there is an update incoming. His quote about getting mad about not being able to play a videogame just shows his ignorance in dealing with eSport atheletes. The problem isn't that we can't play TF2, it's that we CAN play TF2, but CAN'T play scheduled matches. Without giving up any lee-way on getting scheduled matches played, he's creating more problems. Perhaps if they know an update is coming, they could switch over to a bare-bones client that won't break, then fully update again that night when no one is playing.

If ESEA falls through, TF2'ers will go elsewhere. The community will be fine and will take what little disposable income to someone else.
