Since this tournament was first announced in late June, we have gone through two stages of play and the 62 registered teams have played around 120 matches. The group play stage featured 16 groups of 4 teams competing to advance to a single elimination stage of 32 teams. These 32 teams fought their way towards the finals match over the past few months as ESEA Season 9 wrapped up.
In some ways, the ESEA S9 Invite LAN offered a preview of the final rounds of this tournament with The Prophets aka eMg, Classic Mixup, The Experiment, and Area51 Gaming (the teams that composed our semifinals) traveling to Dallas in pursuit of the ESEA S9 trophy. The results of the ESEA S9 Invite LAN were not representative of this event, though, as Classic Mixup was able to avenge its LAN finals loss to the Prophets and snatch the top spot from the defending ESEA champions Wednesday night. Classic Mixup chose cp_badlands for their half of the best-of-three and won the map 5-3, giving them an early lead. The next map, cp_granary, was chosen by b4nny and his comrades. Their choice turned out to be a good one and the Prophets won 5-2 to push the grand finals to a tiebreak. I selected cp_warmfront for the tiebreak and the teams proceeded on into the night with eXtv in tow. After a fair amount of back-and-forth play, Classic Mixup pulled away and finished the map with a score of 5-2 in their favor to win the series and the tournament.
