Match of the Week: CEVO S5 W2

Welcome to Community FT's first segment of Match of the Week! We're already two weeks into CEVO Season 5 and with the dead teams finally confirmed as dead, and the good teams almost confirmed as legitimately good, we can finally start to guess as to what the best match ups of the week are going to be. We'll be looking at tonight's big game with the CEVO-P juggernauts, as well as getting an interview from one of our CEVO-M MotW players. Also watch as I struggle to pick a decent match in CEVO-A. So without further ado, click READ MORE to begin...

CEVO-P MotW: CompLexity (coL.) vs. Area 51 ([51])

There's no question about this being the best match this week in CEVO. The last meeting between these two on Granary was an all-out brawl lasting nearly an hour and ending up 5-4 in Complexity's favor. There is much talk going around about Complexity's latest addition to the team, Brandon "Seagull" Larned, and his impact on joining the roster. Although allegedly brought aboard as a backup, the shifting around teams (being on EG's roster not more than a few days) of this top Invite player has made more than a few people wonder just what exactly coL's starting lineup will look like as the season progresses.

However while all the focus has been on Complexity and their latest addition, Area 51 have made a recent acquisition themselves in the form of Chad "HERO" Holstein, formerly of Team EG fame. As of today, Heroo has joined the Area 51 CEVO and ESEA roster, presumably as a backup, but his last minute arrival begs the question as to whether or not he'll be seeing any playtime in tonight's match.

With neither blight (formerly Pandemic) nor EG participating in this season of CEVO, Area 51 is shaping up to be the #2 seed in the Professional division, right behind the heavily favored Complexity. Without any question these are the two teams to beat in CEVO-P, and it goes without saying that tonight will be an interesting match up and hopefully an entertaining rematch of their last match on Granary. You can catch tonight's game live on Pwnage.TV @ 11:00pm EST.

CEVO-M MotW: TONY HAWK PRO SKATERS  (THPS) vs. unrestricted (unR)

CEVO-M is a bit of a mixed bag this season, with lots of teams that are on lots of different skill levels. The difference between the teams at the top and the teams at the bottom is a lot greater than at the professional and to an extent even the amateur division. But this match gets my pick for MotW because these are two teams in the upper half, pretty close in skill, and it is a rematch of a playoff match in S5 of TWL.

I sat down with my boy scootah, soldier for TONY HAWK PRO SKATERS, to talk about his team and this week's match:

Bod: So tell us a little about your team.

scootah: All right, on the starting lineup we've got Boensaw and oov aka solid_snak on scout, myself and Garticuno on soldier, Kalkin on demoman and Faber on medic.

Bod: Who do you think are the teams to beat in CEVO-M?

scootah: Murked, unRestricted, and No Talent are looking strong this season. Another team that I think will do very well is Mobility Gaming. With .thirtytwo, apy and Hoegie, they could possibly be the team to beat.

Bod: djfivenine ranked you guys 5th in his CEVO-M rankings, saying quote “But they are all overshadowed by Harbleu, who rings and carries the crap out of this team. With Harbleu, they deserve this 5th spot. Without him, they are probably a .500 main team.” First of all, does Harbleu still play for you guys?

scootah: Nah, Harbleu is not playing for us. Originally in TWL, THPS was going to have to scrounge up ex-teammates who were still on the roster so that they could play in the playoffs, but Harbleu put himself on for kicks. Of course, THPS didn't turn him down because he's such a strong player and a good friend, but now his "carrying" has given us a bad rep. This season he will just be roster riding, he will not be playing in any of our matches.

Bod: Always good to hear when dj is wrong about something. So how about the unRestricted guys, you used to play with them back when they were TEAMBAD, correct? What can you tell us about them?

scootah: The TEAMBAD guys are a great bunch, and good players as well. Frances is an excellent soldier who can do a lot of work with steady heals. Their scouts, Dchow and Jiao Su are both solid and will give plenty scout duos a hard time in the coming weeks. Despite being teamless for a while, Catastrophe has been doing well on Bad. He just naturally gels with them. Deerhaunter, the good-hearted healer is a great guy to have on your side, and Sterl can take a kritz like a god. All in all, they are a solid team with the team work you can expect from being together for nearly a year. This will make them a challenge for everyone in CEVO-M.

Bod: Give us a prediction for Complexity vs Area 51 tonight.

scootah: Obviously both teams are very strong, but I think 51 will pull ahead. Ducky, Stamjally and Fastfire are amazing, and I think the 51 scout duo will be fine against the notorious Complexity scouts. Even if they don't win, it will definitely be a great match. I can't wait to watch.

Bod: Any final comments, clichés, maybe some shoutouts?

scootah: Shoutout to Sterl, Jiao, Dchow, Deerhaunter, Catastrophe, Frances, Kep, Hyku, Randome, Enderlady, Antipathy, Bill Steed, Stein, Aaronlol, Thief, Corey, Bah, DreamGalloper69, Team Abuse, Archer, Bruce, Kung, NSX, Gravegun, Zephyr, Caps, ymr, Radio Raheem, sg, Bill S. Preston Esquire, Evan, Chrustler, Harbleu, Aldaris, my mom and dad and of course the fags at THPS. I love you guys.

Bod: Thanks for the interview, good luck this season.

CEVO-A MotW: dawgz vs Violent Revolution

The first few weeks of CEVO-A are pretty brutal: Bad teams beating up on other bad teams. It's survival of the fittest -- the top few begin to rise while the rest sink to the bottom of the barrel, usually to break up and UNINSTALL TF2 FOREVER. Unfortunately there weren't many good matches to choose from this week, as the pool of teams is still too large and it's still uncertain who the good teams are going to be. But my pick goes to dawgz vs Violent Revolution.

The dawgz guys have been around for a season or so now, and are constantly getting better as a team. With class acts such as Jinn aka Graham aka CEVO-Clay aka the-guy-who-nags-at-me-when-I'm-being-lazy-about-writing-Comm FT-articles-that-I-say-I-will-write-and-then-don't, it's hard not to root for dawgz. Violent Revolution is a new team, but it's got some guys that have been around for more than a season or two. I know Terminator is on demo, team captain traGic on med, pt presumably on soldier and MR SLIN presumably on scout, and the other guys I don't really know anything about.

This one gets my MotW stamp of approval because I think this is the only match up this week where both teams look like possible playoff contenders. With many of the better CEVO-A teams having moved up to Main division at the beginning of the season, it should be an easy ride to the playoffs for all the teams with experience that are still in CEVO-A. We'll see how things shake down here, and maybe next week we'll have a better picture of how the giant CEVO-A division is going to turn out.

That's all for this week, if you've got your own picks for good matches in CEVO this week be sure to share with us in the comments or on the forums. Stay tuned next week for more coverage and more interviews!
