As the first week of ESEA playoffs closes, we find ourselves nodding in solemn acceptance and with our jaws on the floor, depending on which division we were watching and with very few responses in-between.  While the first two maps in Intermediate mimicked what we saw end-of-season, Open’s underdogs came out swinging and threw expectations out the window.

Read on for a break-down of this week’s happenings:

Intermediate:

Seas were pretty calm this week for Intermediate’s top dogs, though LASER BEAMS surprised us with an unbelievably close 5-4 win over 90lg and Xensity taught us a hard, cold lesson about policy when admins denied them a reschedule.  Despite their cooperative agreement with Leviathan Gaming for a new date/time to play their match on cp_granary, it appears that in ESEA post-season a scheduled match is—by definition—a scheduled match.  We’re still waiting to see who will move on to Round 2 in the Lower Bracket.

Open:

Near the end of the regular season, black people looked like they might wreak some havoc, but after finishing 16^th it didn’t look like they’d be causing much damage.  They proved us wrong in Upper Round 1 when they defeated Immortal 6, allowing the league favorite only one point in the first half.  And that wasn’t the only surprise.  We saw the leaderboard flip over and over again, with Jamtown Jesus Jambori coming out with a 5-3 victory against Carl Sagan Foundation and Slay Mode losing to SWAGGIN BALL Z 2-5.
