ESEA Open Team Watch - Unibroue Season 9

Source TV, how I hateth thee. Thy demos breaketh, ye be laggieth, and thy delay thwarts my attempts to fixeth games. I’ve been a-playing too much Medieval mode.

Well STV demos seem to be back up so I’m going to present my report on Unibroue’s matches up to now. Matches four and six were forfeit wins for Unibroue, and seven and eight were during the week where all demos were corrupted. Thanks Valve!

I have eschewed the written detail of my assessment of the teams, instead talking more about it at the end of the cast. I’ll still summarize their play though.

For their third match I did an audio cast; interestingly enough you can find Sigma’s review from the point of view of Unibroue’s opponents Midnight Society here. Mine is from Unibroue’s perspective; it’s also a lot funnier.

And the fifth match has video thanks to Salamancer! Beware: he does speak a little in between halves.

Match 3 - cp_granary

Unibroue played too passively for my tastes on Granary. The basic idea, which is definitely harder when you’re in the game, is that they need to push when they get an advantage. You may have noticed how the best teams can push with just a 10-15% uber advantage; it’s just that they are that quick to pounce on opportunities. Unibroue’s still relatively new as a team, which I think shows in those moments.

Match 5 - koth_pro_viaduct_rc2

STV demo: http://tf2demos.com/demo/1311462849/unibroue-vs-sid

Maybe King of the Hill is just Unibroue’s game, because they did so much right on Viaduct. I think that they carried a psychological advantage from the beginning of the match into the aggressive, bullying play they showed into the second half. Note that player wanna12 in game is in fact their roamer kaypin.

I uploaded Match seven here if you want to try, but Match eight’s ESEA download link is broken.

Now that I’ve caught up to Unibroue, I’m going to do a live cast of their ninth match tonight, against Team Bad v2, on cp_warmfront, at 10:30 EST. Unless Valve releases another update.

very seldom do top teams push with a 10-15% advantage…

That's true, but it does happen. It happened, for example, in the UK vs. Germany ESL Finals on Granary. The reason it usually doesn't happen is because the other team will be wary and protect their medic. I'm simply saying that worse teams, even if they wanted to, would not coordinate it fast enough. But if they could, then it would work more often since the opponents are weaker.

Thanks Reds. I look forward to criticizing how you play soldier while eating some Pop Tarts.

Badlands/Warmfront are to be forgotten and you can expect roster changes for GPit.

#2 Wintersun 2011-07-27 20:04 Granary overall was terrible for us because we had roster issues before the match.

KotH was decent.

Badlands/Warmfront are to be forgotten and you can expect roster changes for GPit.
