Competitive Leagues for the new season

I wrote this info for my team while we are trying to figure out which league to go into. But I feel like many other teams are asking the same question at the moment. So why not just post it on commft and maybe help a few teams with their decision. My pros and cons are mainly for low/mid, mid, mid+ teams and really doesn't mean much for the pro and high teams, but it still impacts over 50 teams in TF2 right now.

There are 3 big leagues this season in TF2:

Team Warfare League
4 Divisions with different skill levels
Start Date: November 30th
Match days: Monday

Alienware Tourney
Double Elimination Tourney with 128 teams
Start Date: December 3rd
Match days: Monday+Thursday

ESEA
Open and Invite division
Start Date: December 6th
Match days: Monday+Wednesday

Well, we obviously have 4 different options for this season, and the choice really isn't easy imo. Let me lay them out for you.

- Do all 3 leagues.

Pros:
Easiest decision if we all decide to commit the time.
We have the option to drop out of any of the leagues if things get to crazy or a league sucks.
Cons:
5 matches a week is too much for anyone. We're going to have to play double or triple headers EACH week.

- Do TWL and Alienware

Pros:
We are supporting alienware's new tourney.
Double elimination tourneys are fun, and different than leagues.
TWL needs support after losing so many top teams.
TWL is fun and we are guaranteed to play teams of our caliber.

Cons:
If we get eliminated from Alienware early, we're pretty much stuck the whole season with only TWL, one match per week
Alienware is pretty much CEVO. Pretty obvious that they are changing the name because everyone is tired of CEVO.

- Do TWL and ESEA

Pros:
Honestly, we can't win Alienware with teams like EG and loaded in there. We can at least try to win TWL and ESEA
Fun league in TWL, repected league in ESEA, nice combo

Cons:
We are missing out on the "big tourney" of the season.
You gotta pay for ESEA

- Do Alienware and ESEA

Pros:
A lot of fun matches each week.
The 2 leagues that will get us the most respect if we have a good showing.
If we get eliminated from Alienware early, we still have 2 tough matches/week in ESEA.

Cons:
4 matches/week is almost as difficult as 5
Probably the most challenging choice. Except for a few early matches in Alienware, there are not going to be any easy wins.

So I ask you, competitive community...What are your pros and cons for each league? And which leagues have you decided to join?

#1 Kuiper 2009-11-14 19:04 It's probably also worth mentioning that the Alienware tournament is only open to USA and Canada (sans Quebec). If you have any players who don't fall into that region, it becomes less of an option (although it's still possible and definitely viable if you already had an overfilled roster).

Total: $567.25
