Team Chemistry: Important But Often Ignored

Letter from Heavy

So it's been awhile since I last wrote an article and this time I wanted to impart some advice to the community. One of the most important things in any team game whether it's an e-sport or otherwise is team chemistry. Often times it's ignored by players who think that skill can overcome it, but what they fail to realize is that team chemistry is a prerequisite to good team work. What does it mean to have good team chemistry? How much does it affect your teamwork? I'll cover all this and more after the jump.

Team Chemistry

Team chemistry is essentially your relationship with your team, to anyone watching a game you can easily tell which team has good team chemistry and which does not. I personally keep the attitude that as teammates you should become friends, it'll make it that much easier to work together. A combo that has a good relationship will have a much easier time working together than one who play together on a strictly "business" fashion. How can you build team chemistry though?

How-to build team chemistry

  • "Hang out" - sit around in your Mumble (or other VoIP server) and joke around, talk, share funny videos etc.
  • Play together! This can't be repeated enough, the more you play together the more you learn each others play style, this will make working together much easier when you know what you and your teammates are capable of.
  • Discuss any strategy you may think of with at least one team member. For every strategy that makes it into actual play, ten never leave your mind. If you at least make the effort towards discussing them with your teammates there's more chances it'll end up being used or at the very least tested in a practice.
  • How Team Chemistry feeds into good Teamwork

Really this is something that should be a no-brainer, but it's overlooked nonetheless. When you have a good relationship with your team, your teamwork will improve, it's an absolute, look at any big name sport team members are all very good friends (usually) and it's evident in a great team that their friendships are changing their game. Sure you may not have as many chances to go out to a bar together (or some other activity) but there are still ways to help your team's chemistry improve and from that your team work. A scout pair like enigma and carnage work well because the two guys mesh very well and have a great sense of each others' capabilities and this came from their hours of play together and general time spent communicating with each other.

It's really something that can't be stressed enough, become friends with your teammates, and the benefits will outweigh any negative. Pretty soon you'll be playing much better together and having a lot more fun in matches. That's all I've got for today's article, play together, chat a lot and build friendships with your team, the result's affect on your game as a team will surprise you.

The impression I get of most sports teams is that most of them don't really like each other that much. In fact the impression I get of most teams of people is relationship tends to be pretty love-hate.

Obviously you're not a fan of soccer, the relationships between soccer players is practically like brothers in the good teams.

#5 pyyyour 2010-03-08 02:00 Biggest pain of tf2.pug.na is that it's nearly impossible to work off of a player consistently.

Simply play off the people around you, maturely baiting them, shooting where they shoot, occasionally looking at their blind spot.

By playing around 1 other player, you can manage to get out alive if shit hits the fan, you can do exponential amounts of damage, and you will alleviate pressure on the rest of your team by being a driving force by yourself.

#4 mustardoverlord 2010-03-07 03:35 this is why I can never be a high level tf2 player, my constant demands to have the other scout go where I go :)

#3 Grillz 2010-03-07 03:15 I like this article and completely agree.
I even suggest to new teams to take chemistry into consideration when picking up new players. I believe there is a certain level where skill exponentially falls off (aim and know-how) and from there on in its about THIS stuff. And as we all know, it's even more essential in this mature cartoon game we call Team Fortress 2.

Hey Jesus, guess which game everyone else but you on your team plays that would really help out the synergy, eh?

It starts with L and ends with "eague of Legends".

Nah, I'm joking with you, but seriously, follow your own advice too. :) Our team is cool and all but yeah.

I would play that but my computer wasn't fond of it, I got instacrash upon start-up.
