hindsight's previous post
Something is wrong. Although seemingly warm, the sunlight does not nourish them in the same manner that it nourished their predecessors. Throughout their sapling years, they had grown distant from the ways of their parents. They sought the bright light rather than that which most furthers their growth. They sought appearance rather than substance.
The community is unable to resist the entreaties of money. Whether it is prize pots or the legitimacy provided by entry payments, money is inextricably linked to gaming in the minds of the gamers. The children say: if a league doesn’t have a prize pot, why play? The children laugh: if a league doesn’t have entry fees, why play? Despite the meager income provided by the largest TF2 prize pot and the lack of a correlation between entry fees and legitimacy, the children repeat these questions. Yet the true irony lies in their demands for a community-run league.
The saplings continue to grow but their growth is stunted. The brightness of the light has led them to seek darkness; they cannot find their way except in the shade. It is only getting worse.

There's a growing consensus that there must be a better way of conducting the business of gaming that doesn't involve broad community subsidization of a handful of teams and league owners.
There's no irony in the demand that exists for a community run entity that would work to lift the nominal but not insignificant fiscal burden of competitive gaming from teams and players, and also make it profitable for a wider section of participants than…ESEA's ownership. People are tired of getting fleeced. What's ironic is how the efforts taken to 'save' ESEA7 are being treated as synonymous with 'saving the community' after they told us, in no uncertain terms, to fuck off.
Just because a Pavlovian response exists between entry fees and perceived legitimacy doesn't mean that the community at large isn't aware of how they're getting dicked over by such constructs, or that they don't want something better.
I must be some freak then.
Take that time my team didnt have sponsorship to attend the ESEA lan. Even if by some miracle we went and won the lan, the money we would have made would have been lees then we spent to get there.
I've been pretty outspoken that I am not impressed with ESEA or lans, so this shouldnt be a surprise comming from me, but I fail too see what the big deal is with ESEA and their prize pot.
The only thing I can imagine is that is brings some sort of pseudo-vindication for putting so much time into an otherwise fruitless hobby.
I myself, used to enjoy the hobby, just for the hobby.
