Season 5 of CEVO is getting underway. Many old school tf2ers remember the glory days of CEVO and wish the league and its participation was anywhere close to that. I decided to take off my whiner's hat and talk about the positive aspects of CEVO this season.
Let's start with CEVO-P. Eight teams signed up, three currently readied up with less than a week to go, and really only two teams with a shot of winning this...ok, let's move away from CEVO-P if I want this article to be positive.
Let's talk about CEVO-A. Ahh yes, Cevo amateur, a great chance for the low to low-mid teams to show off their talents and compete without mid or higher teams jumping in there and drowning their confidence Andrea Yates style. And this season, it looks like that might happen with mid or any team claiming mid moving up to CEVO-M. 73 active teams signed up only means one thing. The league will finish with about 50 teams and random horrible teams will sneak into the playoffs due to forfeits/easy schedules and start claiming that they are mid+ because they made the CEVO-A playoffs...shit, I'm getting negative again....
And that leaves us with CEVO-M. A collection of "I don't know them" and "you're not mid" teams. Honestly this league would have had some promise if some of the teams jumped back to Amateur, and other playoff caliber players made new teams. But it really seems like CEVO M will be a 4 team race....with 6 other teams hanging around the mid level. The bottom half teams won't be embarrassed because they'll get enough wins against the other bottom half teams and most will just end up around a .500 record at the end of the season.
So what the crap do I write about? I'll try my best at a CEVO M Power ranking....
11. Sever and the bl0wfish - I knew this team would not last long when Hoegie told me that he gave jake Medicing lessons. Hoegie going scout, Mikey not pocket...why the hell do I have these guys at #1? Oh well, I'm too lazy to change things around....if any editors are not lazy, can you put these guys at #11 please? You're welcome?
2. Team Exile - This team is like the Ric Flair of TF2. Old as fock, still wrestling, but will most likely put on a good show. Aside from kayp, none of these guys played last season. But that doesn't mean they are not dangerous. Most of the roster have tasted CEVO-P competition back in Season 1 and 2. Branjon was once considered the best sniper in tf2. Someone just needs to tell them that soldiers only get 20 rockets now and you can upgrade dispensers and teleporters.
3. Team Murked - You only have to see the name REP to automatically consider them a contender this season. Half way through the season, they'll probably change the team name to "REP don't want team name". Abuser is a great medic, but this might be the REP show. Don't get down on this team though, I've seen what REP can do against mid competition, and that is why I am putting REP don't want team name as a top contender.
4. Focus Gaming - I had these guys at #1 until that whole issue with Kayaws and school. Now they don't even have a demo signed up on the roster. Plus their other scout starter, yodogs is not ready for some reason. Is LMM even going to play CEVO? There are a few good names interested in that demo spot, so if they managed to put up a mid+ demo, expect these guys to be hanging around as a top contender all season.
5. Tony Hawk - The D2 TWL champions decided to step out of the kiddie-pool and give real competition a shot. Some talented players on this team including kalkin and gartunio. But they are all overshadowed by Harbleu, who rings and carries the crap out of this team. With Harbleu, they deserve this 5th spot. Without him, they are probably a .500 main team...which is still good.
6. Smile Theory - There are some no names on the roster. But a combination of deth, bigwill and smilie/c-r convinced me that these guys will get some good wins in there and be in the playoffs.
