The Weekly State of TF2 Show Featuring Your Hosts, Siggy and Fish!

Every week or so, Sigma and I end up discussing new developments in TF2, whether it's a new patch, new strategies, or whatever. We figured that we might as well do a tiny bit of editing and just post it on CommFort. Any format suggestions are encouraged, as any discussion in the comments or on the forums. Oh, and this is all opinion, but it won't always be clear whose opinion it is. :3

New Maps

We need them! Badlands and Granary are such staples that even Granary is getting boring. More on that in the XPL section. Also, where is our goddamn 5-Spire map and our Gpit 5-cp?

Fish's Choice: Obscure-

This map is a ton of fun for medics that are awake. The map is just riddled with tactical opportunities (even more so since the map is new). There are tons of places for soldiers to jump the medic, but none are great. This boils down to a lot of risk vs reward situations that could go either way, especially if a team forgets to communicate. Obscure takes the idea of chokepoints and says, "Oh hey, I know that you can spam these really easily. Now here's too many to cover. HAVE FUN!" Lots of pushes, lots of flanks, lots of fun.

Sigma's Favorite: Gullywash-

It's just fighting. All of the time. The action is a lot faster than Badlands. Last point has a ton of paths jumbled together, which means that the attack on the final point can be a surprise, depending on how you play it.

This week in TF2

TF2 sure has taken a lot of shit this week, no?  This has been the kind of situation, like the computerized stock market fart Thursday that sent the DOW down a thousand ticks faster than you can say 'wow the server's lagging again,' that prompts you to pause a second, take stock of things and ask...just what the fuck is going on here?

The status quo is the status quo because it's the status quo...

We all know that when it comes to the general scheme of things in gaming, TF2 is a second class citizen to a decade old game.  We understand and accept that it's just the way of things currently, as it has been for any team game that isn't CS.  (If that's too much truth for you already, you should probably stop reading now.)  But it becomes another issue entirely when gaming's current world order is used as an excuse for not delivering services paid for, ignoring perfectly rational solutions to problems, and meeting legitimate concerns with bullshit half answers dripping in three coats of arrogance.

Frustrations with ESEA's mismanagement came to a head this week, and in my opinion, rightly so.  The fine print in whatever membership agreement regarding rules and regulations matters little here when it's shown in public forum just how much contempt is seemingly held for members to their service.

In a Gotfrag forum post (a rarity for me) earlier today, I made the point that ESEA has the right to run their business how they want, citing that they never operated under any sort of false pretense of primarily advancing the gaming community.  And they do, but I certainly wasn't defending their behavior as of late - I was simply trying to make the point that every business owner has an equal opportunity to get in the way of their own progress.

SentrySTRAT vol.2

Hostile Takeover

All eyes are on Hostile Faction as their roster remains uneventful compared to their weekly roster changes from last season. Everyone is looking at Aaronlol as the weak link that will eventually get replaced on the roster. But the truth is, he won't. There are absolutely NO good medics on the market (unless Grieve makes a midseason comeback). Here are the medics on the current top 5 teams in open: Aaronlol, ehfk, djfivenine, st.patrick, rayy. Aside from st.patrick, this is a who's who of former benchwarmers for mid open teams.

The player we all should keep our eyes on to be benched is Vhalin. He has bottomfragged during all 4 matches and continue to maintain very low stats with a pedestrian 1:1 kill death ratio. It is almost like Mark McGuire getting off roids and deciding to try to bat for average. Actually, it is exactly like that. Vhalin is trying to play a honest game this season, which could easily lead him to the HF bench. At this point, tehoreoz is the better scout and should be starting over vhalin.

SentrySTRAT vol.1

Quack, Quack, SMACK!

Muscle Milk and Moolians, the hottest Frag Video to hit North America TF2 since Reptile: The Movie. Unable to afford to go to ESEA-Invite LAN to put up another amazing performance against current heavy-hitters, compLexity.TF2. One of the most insane demos in the game, soldiers who both are good in their respective ways, two of the most underrated scouts in TF2, and a solid medic to round it out. Not the kind of reputation of an 0-5 team clinging for life at the bottom of ESEA-Invite, is it?

Why is the hottest team from last season basically about to be put back into ESEA-open? Fastfire and Stamjally.

Your pocket soldier is your flow. He is the meat and potatoes to the casserole. He is the Peyton to the colts. Unless you have a pocket soldier who is constantly around and always evolving his game you are going to drift away with the current. This claim is not unfounded, there are many rumblings in the community about 51 and their need for a more "active" soldier; especially versus teams like eMg, AG, and NeXus who are all planning to make a statement this season.

Stamjally. I doubt any of you have ever watched a pov demo of the man. I doubt it. Maybe one of you. Probably the one person who will agree with me. Stamjally was a beast last season. His movement makes everyone and their mother miss, and when he include his above average aim, you have a killer.  Too many people make the mistake of seeing scouts as just clean-up players and items to "scout" areas out. Stamjally played like Enigma. Making soldiers miss left and right allowing for Ducky and Cbear to lay down the damage. Stam has now been replaced by DL. A pugstar. Sure he can spy really well..... in pugs. But he is nowhere near as effective as Stamjally.

Momentum in TF2 - A Push Guide

One of the main problems experienced by "low" - "mid" teams is a failure to understand when an opportunity presents itself. Often when spectating or ringing, I see a team crawl through yard 6v3 and give up a 15s charge advantage, or push mid 6v6 even uber, or leave a demo and soldier on last against 2 freshly-spawned scouts. The words "should we push?" echo through the mumble as the 5s window to take a position closes and the round slips away. So, with the CEVO season underway and ESEA just around the corner, I figured I would write a bit about how to recognize and take advantage of opportunities. If you feel that you have to leave someone on the last point before you can move up, or if you don't know why you can roll a round in 2 minutes then spend 20 failing pushes to last, read on.
